Chocolate Cake for Breakfast!

On Thursday evening my family went to an awards ceremony for my daughter. She won a Gold Key award for a story she wrote, and they were honoring the winners. We are insanely proud of her πŸ™‚ Β  After the awards ceremony, we went to dinner at Outback to celebrate. We tried their new desert, an Oreo waffle sunday sort of thing. The waffle was chocolate and tasted suspiciously like cake, topped with caramel sauce, a few crushed up Oreo cookies, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Ever since then, I’ve been wanting to try to make them, and so this morning, I did.

I looked up recipes on Pinterest for Chocolate Waffles, but they all involved a lot of ingredients that I didn’t have, and would take more time than I wanted to spend (we are finally moving stuff into the shed today – whoot-whoot!). So, thinking that the one from Outback tasted exactly like cupcakes, I thought it would be easiest to use a boxed cake mix. I was glad that I have an obsession with keeping a few boxes on hand for “emergencies”. I used Devil’s Food, but I think any flavor will do.

I mixed it as if I were making a cake, following the directions from the box.

I love my mixer!

As that was mixing, I heated up the waffle maker. I used about 3/4 of a cup for each waffle. Be sure not to use too much batter, or it will end up making a mess like this!

Oops!

My waffle maker automatically times itself, so I can’t tell you how long to cook them for, but they came out perfectly just using the same setting as I use for regular waffles.

They cooked up perfectly!

The waffles were light and fluffy, and would have been great with a scoop of ice cream and some strawberries.

The kids couldn’t believe I was letting them have chocolate cake for breakfast! My son’s friend, who stayed the night, actually starting singing a song about the wonders of chocolate cake for breakfast. It was totally worth not following the “rules” of good parenting just to see their faces!

Chocolate waffles and whipped cream - delicious!!

Thanks! I am trying to use my “real” camera, instead of my camera phone. Unfortunately, I think my lens is not working correctly, so they are slightly blurry. Buying it second hand was probably not the best idea.

We were there tonight and the waiter said Dubcan Hines Cake Mix and a package of chocolate pudding mix. Make the cake ad directed, then add in the box of pudding mix.
